UK: Meet the man who’s been driving hundreds of miles every day to save XL bullies

A man drove 200 miles from the West Midlands to Scotland on New Year’s Eve in order to save two XL bullies, in just one of a series of multiple journeys dedicated to rescuing the breed.

Sammy Wilkinson, an XL bully lover from the West Midlands, has been undertaking a personal rescue mission to save the dogs by transporting them to new homes in Scotland by car.

Although the XL bullies are now banned in England and Wales, this ban does not apply to Scotland.

As the ban comes into force, reports of the dogs being abandoned and even in one sad instance, being brutally killed, have emerged.

Owners who wish to deep the dogs must apply for an exemption, a process which is cumbersome and expensive, which involves subjecting them to certain terms & conditions including being neutered.

Sammy has subsequently saved 30 of the dogs, he stated: “I’m absolutely exhausted and my car is falling apart but you’re not killing these Rishi Sunak, now it’s a race to the Scottish Border before midnight.”

In tribute for his work, a GoFundMe has been set up which has raised over £11,000 already beyond its initial £6000.

“I’m putting this fundraiser together for Sammy Wilkinson. In hope that we can raise some money to help Sammy in saving even more XL Bullies,” Lisa, who set up the fundraiser, wrote.

“Sammy is currently driving Day and Night from the Black Country to Scotland, each time taking a group of XL bullies with him and finding them new homes in Scotland.About 30 dogs so far he’s saved and he’s still going!

“Sammy will continue to do this for as long as he can. Please everyone let’s support him and lets help save more XL Bullies.”
