Woman avoids jail after beating up her own elderly mother, hospitalising her and throwing her medication out of the window in a drunken rage

A Newcastle woman who attacked her vulnerable mother during a drink and drug-fuelled episode has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Caroline Aggas, 41, assaulted her mother in her own home in Benwell by kicking, punching, scratching, and throwing water over her. She also damaged her TV and threw her medication out of a window, leaving the victim – who has mobility issues – bruised, frightened, and unable to retrieve her tablets.

The attack, which took place in September 2023, left the woman hospitalised for over a week. She described feeling “genuinely petrified” following the incident.

Aggas admitted assault at Newcastle Crown Court and was sentenced to 13 months, suspended for 18 months. She must also complete a drug rehabilitation programme and comply with a restraining order.
