WORLD: US Steel span bridge collapses into River after being struck by ship

A giant US steel span bridge has collapsed into the river after being struck by a ship, in what observers are declaring as a mass casualty event.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Balitmore, Maryland, is 1200ft long and was one of the largest bridges in the world, constructed in 1972.

A clip has now gone viral online showing what appears to be the bridge’s total collapse after being struck by a container ship.

It has since been revealed that the ship in question suffered a power failure and the crew on board lost control of it.

At least 20 people were brought down with the bridge’s collapse into the river. A search and rescue operation remains underway, at least one person escaped unharmed but another received serious injuries.
