Man Jailed for 16 Years After Raping and Attacking Woman with Crossbow
A violent offender who raped a woman and threatened her with a crossbow has been jailed for 16 years.
Michael Holmes, 42, subjected the victim to a series of assaults over several months, including two counts of rape, an attempted rape, and grievous bodily harm. During one terrifying incident, Holmes aimed a crossbow at the woman and threatened to kill her. The weapon malfunctioned, and the arrow narrowly missed.
In another attack, Holmes broke the woman’s nose after punching her repeatedly in the face.
Following a police investigation led by South Durham Safeguarding Team, Holmes was charged with multiple offences and later found guilty after a five-day trial at Teesside Crown Court in February. He was sentenced today (April 25) to 16 years in prison with an additional three years on extended licence.
Detective Constable Rebecca Horner, who led the case, praised the victim’s courage, stating: “Holmes is a violent and controlling bully who is a danger to women. I am pleased he is now off the streets and behind bars.”
Durham Police have urged anyone suffering from domestic abuse to seek help, reminding victims they are not alone.
