“Muslim fun run” organisers reviewing policy following outrage over rule that banned women participating
Organisers of a Muslim charity run in East London are reviewing their policies after criticism over a rule that barred women and girls over the age of 12 from participating.
The “family friendly” 5k event, held in Victoria Park and organised by East London Mosque and the London Muslim Centre, was open only to men, boys of all ages, and girls under 12. Critics, including Muslim Women’s Network UK, said the exclusion likely breached the Equality Act.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed called the situation “appalling” and the Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued a warning, though it’s not currently pursuing action. The event has run annually for 12 years and raises funds for youth projects, food banks, refugee support, and other causes.
Organisers say they are committed to supporting women and will review the format ahead of next year’s event.
