The Village’s most popular attraction, Horden Welfare Park brings the simple pleasures of childhood. Awarded the Green Flag Award and the Green Heritage Site Award, the park hosts a number of exciting activities throughout the year. It occupies open spaces for traditional family games and a picnic with the family. The park features junior and toddler sets of play areas; rugby, football and cricket fields. A band stand, bowling greens and a Vintage Tearoom.

The elusive Horden Heritage Centre is situated in the upper rooms of the Vintage Tearoom, which houses memorabilia which looks back over 100 years of Horden history. Mining memorabilia and old photographs of Horden and the villagers can be found there.

Easington Beach

Easington’s small beach is located on the Durham Heritage Coast, approximately mid-way between Sunderland and Hartlepool. It is backed off by cliffs and dunes and there are views from along the rocky coastline and out towards the North Sea. A quiet location that is used by sea anglers and fossil hunters.

The former mining town of Easington Colliery lies just beyond the cliffs on the other side of the coast road, where movie buffs might recognise as some scenes from Billy Elliot.

Put your orienteering skills to use with this self-guided treasure hunt themed Treasure Trail. As you follow the trail route, you can solve clues set on existing buildings, permanent features and monuments to discover the location of ‘buried treasure.’

The trail explores the County Durham town, taking you around the most interesting features of the seafront, along the promenade and through a small section of woodland; as well as visiting one of the oldest churches in the UK – St Mary’s.

The trail is done in your own time, at your own pace and takes approximately three hours to complete. With one trail booklet being enough for a group. With the chance of winning real treasure, all correct answers are entered into a monthly £100 prize draw.
