Jermain Defoe says Bradley Lowery was “one of the most inspirational children the world has ever seen” in heartfelt tribute
Former SAFC forward Jermain Defoe has described Bradley Lowery as “One of the most inspirational children the world has ever seen” in a heartfelt tribute to his “best friend forever” amidst the incident which has shook football.
Defoe, who played for Sunderland from 2015-2017, was widely praised for the loving friendship he struck with Bradley as his illness first came to public attention, spending time with him and offering support to the family.
Since Bradley passed away, Defoe has continued to devote himself to his legacy and memory, including attending charity football matches organised by the Bradley Lowery Foundation and getting a tattoo of his name on his arm. He was amongst those from the club who attended his tearful funeral.
Commenting on the recent incident, Defoe told the media: “I’m appalled and saddened by the actions of the individual in question,”
“My thoughts at this time go out to Gemma and Carl, Bradley’s parents, who shouldn’t have to deal with incidents like this, but rather be praised for the amazing work they are doing with the Bradley Lowery Foundation in their son’s memory.
“I urge the public to stand behind the family and continue to support the foundation and its projects.
“Bradley was one of the most inspirational children this world has ever seen, and he will never stop inspiring us.
“We love and miss you Brad. Love, your best friend forever.”
The incident, which seen Dale Houghton, 31 from Rotherham, plead guilty to a public order offense, has led to an outpouring of support and tributes from across the footballing nation for Bradley and his family.
Sheffield Wednesday fans clubbed together in a fundraiser to raise over £24,000 for his foundation, while NUFC fans also made their own viral tribute by embedding his image on their club crest.
