Chester-le-Street woman detained in Egypt, Foreign Office confirms

A woman from Chester-le-Street, County Durham, has been detained in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The circumstances remain unclear, but unconfirmed reports suggest the woman is being held in connection with an alleged assault. UK officials say they are providing consular support and are in contact with local authorities.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who is detained in Egypt.”
