Labour select candidate for Sunderland Central to replace Julie Elliott

The Labour Party have selected their new candidate for the Sunderland Central constituency to replace the outgoing Julie Elliott.

Lewis Atkinson, an NHS manager from Sunderland, was appointed yesterday to fill the position.

Atkinson has had a professional career in the health service since 2006 having graduated with a Master’s in Medical management from the University of Birmingham.

An SAFC fan, Atkinson stated: “Sunderland is a great city with cracking people. A city where I’ve lived & worked, laughed & cried.

It’s a city that I love so it’s the honour of my life to be selected as the Labour candidate for Sunderland Central. I know after 14 years of Tory govt, Sunderland needs change.”

Although the Conservatives came close in the Sunderland Central constituency in 2019, the governing party are now heading for what polls project at this time to be a record defeat, making Labour’s retention of the seat an absolute certainty.
