Man jailed after killing baby and aunt drink driving at 141 mph while using phone on the A1

A man has been jailed after he caused the death of a baby boy and his aunt by drink driving at 141mph on the A1 while on his mobile phone.

Darryl Anderson was more than twice the drink drive limit when he hit the Peugeot 308 that eight-month-old Zackary Blades and his auntie, 30-year-old Karlene Warner, were travelling in on the A1(M) near Chester-le-Street in the early hours of Friday, May 31, 2024.

While tested he was found to be three times over the legal limit with 95mg in his system.

Analysis of his phone then found he also texting while driving.

When arrested on the scene he attempted to deny responsibility by claiming he had fallen asleep.

He appeared at Durham Crown Court today, July 9, where he was sentenced to 17 years and three months in prison.

He was also banned from driving for 21-and-a-half years.
