South Tyneside Seafront Parking charges increase substantially, provoking public anger
South Tyneside Council has announced an increase in parking charges for the seafront of the area, provoking public anger.
The increase, which applies to South Shields and all other seafront areas under their jurisdiction, such as Marsden, removes the 1p per minute initial tariff and standardises the £1.20 an hour rate.
This means that even brief stops at their designated car parks have become considerably more expensive.
The council have subsequently been accused of inconveniencing residents and visitors from other areas.
As local authority budgets have suffered substantially due to the surge of inflation and energy costs in the UK, it has become commonplace for car parking charges to be increased as a way of clawing back lost revenue.
Seaham also controversially ended free parking on their seafront at the beginning of this year.
