The Northern Horizon

For too long, people have associated SGM with promoting “negativity” in Sunderland. This is because a significant part of its social media following is comprised of people who have negative or cynical views pertaining to the council and the city centre, who subsequently dominate discourse.

While this is the case with most Sunderland based platforms, as it is a reality that these views are widely held, it is nonetheless assumed that SGM is devoted to “promoting” or encouraging these views because precisely we aren’t deemed to do enough to promote Sunderland, or give too much coverage to contentious political controversies, giving perceptions of editorial bias.

Indeed, SGM was originally set up to promote Sunderland, and it is fair to say the project has indeed been derailed by the negative local atmosphere which has led to polarisation. However, promoting Sunderland is not a partisan issue, despite attempts by some camps to transform it into a debate of “Labour vs. Anti-Labour” which is why as of April 28th, 2026, we are launching The Northern Horizon of which will seek to visualise and imagine a number of ambitous projects within Sunderland aiming at transforming our city, which we will then use our platforms to promote and influence local discourse with.

As some key disclaimers:

  1. This is unofficial and no project proposed by SGM represents an official planning application, artist’s impression or council position unless it later does officially.
  2. SGM does not receive any funding, directly or indirectly, for such projects.
  3. These ideas or visions do not represent any alignment, indirectly or directly, with party politics, and nor does it constitute an endorsement of any governing body or authority.
