Three 15 year old boys arrested on suspicion of raping a woman near Priory

Three boys, aged just 15, have been arrested after a woman reported being raped in broad daylight near a coastal landmark.

The alleged attack happened near Tynemouth Priory, in Tynemouth, on Sunday afternoon and was reported soon after. And now detectives have arrested three teenagers on suspicion of rape. The Chronicle understands in alleged victim is in her 30s.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3.50pm on Sunday we received a report of rape in the Tynemouth Priory and Castle area of Tynemouth. An investigation was immediately launched by police, and the female victim continues to be supported by specialist officers.

“Officers have arrested three males, all aged 15, on suspicion of rape. They have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police.”

Now managed by English Heritage, Tynemouth Castle and Priory was once one of the largest fortified areas in England. The ruins overlook the North Sea and the River Tyne. The site, close to the centre of Tynemouth village is now a popular visitor attraction.
