Woman dies after being hit by Metro

A woman has died after being hit by a Metro train in Whitley Bay this morning.

Emergency services were called to South Wellfield in Whitley Bay shortly after 10am following a report of concern for a female. Two ambulance crews, a duty officer and two Hazardous Area Response Team crew attended the scene.

However, the woman was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 10am today (Thursday), we received a report of concern for a female near to a level crossing on South Wellfield in Whitley Bay

“Emergency services attended and a woman was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed.
