Sunderland 1-0 Portsmouth – Match Report
An early Wilson Isidor goal earns The Black Cats all 3 points against 10-man Pompey, after Marlon Pack saw red for a denial of a goal scoring opportunity.
Sunderland stay 4th, but have moved to within 2 points of the automatic places, and 3 points off Leeds United at the top.
Wilson Isidor scored the first real chance of the game in the 7th minute, after Eliezer Mayenda drove at the defence, times his pass perfectly and Isidor slotted the ball in past the ‘keeperto score his 3rd goal in his last 4 matches.
Mayenda had a huge chance to score himself in the first half also as he dribbled into the box and worked his way through, but his shot hit the side netting.
Patrick Roberts also had an effort cleared off the line after adjusting his body well to direct the ball towards the goal following an Adil Aouchiche cross.
The second-half was quite even to begin with, but a mistake at the back for Pompey saw Isidor running threw on goal, and he was pulled down by Marlon Pack, who saw red for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Portsmouth sat back for the majority of the match after dropping down to 10-men, and Sunderland struggled to create too many chances.
Isidor had a chance to double his tally, but his curling effort went just wide, and Eliezer Mayenda was denied by a brilliant block by Rob Atkinson.
Pompey almost stole a points right at the end, after a free-kick was floated into the box, and Colby Bishop was inches away from getting on the end of it.
Next up for Sunderland is Stoke City at home in the FA Cup on Saturday.
