The Black Cats’ travel down to Ashton Gate this afternoon, as they hope to build up some momentum going into the new season.

The game is completely sold out, and it will be the largest crowd at Ashton Gate, in an opening match for 44 years!

Sunderland started the season well with a promising 1-1 draw with Coventry at the Stadium of Light thank to a goal from Jack Clarke after just 11 minutes.

Bristol City however, were defeated by Hull City 2-1 on the opening day despite being 1-0 up until the 76th minute.

The Black Cats’ haven’t beaten The Robins’ since 1999, where they came out on top with a 1-0 win away from home.

The last time the 2 sides met was in 2018, Sunderland’s last season in the Championship.

Bristol City were 3-0 up at half-time, but thanks to 2 own goals and a goal by Aiden McGeady, the Black Cats’ miraculously drew the game 3-3 and the match was dubbed by Sunderland fans as, ‘Brustanbul’.

Sunderland will need to try and keep Andreas Weimann quiet, Cities star man who got 22 goals in the Championship last season.

The Austrian international also opened his account for the season in their defeat against Hull last week.

Sunderland’s star man, Ross Stewart will be hoping he can get his first goal of the season after his magnificent return of 26 goals in all competitions last season.
