Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Sunderland – Match Report
Eliezer Mayenda scores another brace against Sheffield Wednesday, as Sunderland hold on to get back to winning ways.
Just like he did in the reverse fixture back in August, Eliezer Mayenda haunts The Owls with 2 goals to move Sunderland to 5 points behind Sheffield United in 2nd place.
It was a controversial opening goal for Sunderland, as it looked like Mayenda brought the ball down from Hjelde’s pass with his hand, before squeezing the ball past the Sheffield Wednesday ‘keeper.
It was a horrible start to the second half for the Black Cats, as Sheffield Wednesday equalized just 2 minutes after the interval.
A poor touch from Chris Mepham let Ingelsson loose with the ball, and he crossed it in towards Callum Patterson, who flicked the ball past Anthony Patterson with his head, and into the back of the net.
The Owls began to push on for the win, but Sunderland were able to weather the storm, and eventually take back the lead with just over a quarter of an hour to go.
It was brilliant build up play by Sunderland, before Trai Hume put in a delightful ball into Mayenda, who’s fantastic header was too powerful for the ‘keeper.
Fir once, Sunderland managed the end of the game we’ll, not conceding too many chances, and Wednesday struggled to cause Anthony Patterson in goal, many problems.
The Black Cats stay 4th, but they have moved to within 5 points of the top 2, who play tomorrow.
Sheffield Wednesday stay 13th and 6 points below the play-offs, at least until tomorrow, where they could potentially drop to 15th, and go 9 points behind the top 6.
Next up for Sunderland is Cardiff City at The Stadium of Light on Saturday 8th March at 3pm.
