Eliezer Mayenda scores twice as Sunderland smash Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in the first home match of the season.
Sunderland move up to 2nd in the table, behind Burnley on goal difference, after the first 2 matches.
Today’s win makes it 2 wins in Regis Le Bris’ first 2 league matches as Sunderland’s head coach.
The Black Cats took the lead just 11 minutes into the match, after a well worked Patrick Roberts free-kick found Dennis Cirkin on the back post, who nodded the ball in.
Just 4 minutes later, Eliezer Mayenda scored his first goal for the club, after pouncing on a mistake by Josh Windass, and the ball fell to Mayenda on the edge of the box and he curled in a brilliant strike.
Chris Rigg almost made it 3, soon after Sunderland’s seconds, but Wednesday’s ‘keeper, James Beadle, pulled of a brilliant reaction save to keep him out.
However, despite being 2-0 up so early, Sunderland kept pushing for more, and they were rewarded again, as Luke O’Nien scored his second goal on as many matches.
Chris Rigg’s shot was deflected into the path of O’Nien, who prodded home Sunderland’s 3rd of the game.
Sunderland carried on their attacking play in the second half, and it took just over a minute for Mayenda to score his second of the game.
Rigg played a wonderful ball in behind to Jack Clarke, who played the ball square for Mayenda to finish from close range.
Next up, Sunderland play the current league leaders, Burnley at the Stadium of Light.
MoTM – Eliezer Mayenda.
