The Sunderland Royalty Theatre is the second theatrical venue of the City of Sunderland. Although it lacks the towering prestige of the Empire, it nonetheless boasts a near century long history as a community operated venue, owned by its members, dedicated to bringing all kinds of drama and productions to the area. Its quality is not to be underestimated.
Whilst the Sunderland Empire specializes in high end publicity west end shows and musicals, the Sunderland Royalty Theatre is known for its much deeper dive into the world of drama by hosting plays across the spectrum, from the well known to the niche. This makes it a more preferable venue for real drama enthusiasts.
What makes the Sunderland Royalty Theatre more remarkable is that it is an organization everyone can get involved in. It is not seeking private profit, but is run by volunteers and offers anyone who is interested the chance to participate. Whether it is the acting itself, or costumes, props or lighting, there is much to be done. Membership of the theatre is just £45 a year, which gives you the right to see all of its productions.
