Sunderland 1-2 Stoke City – Match Report

Sunderland suffer their first home defeat of the season to Stoke City, as they fall out of The FA Cup thanks to a Niall Ennis strike in exta-time after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.

Tom Cannon opened the scoring for Stoke City in the 4th minute, after Luke O’Nien gave away a penalty for a foul on Lewis Koumas.

The Black Cats’ biggest chance of the first-half came from Adil Aouchiche, who’s curling effort from just outside the box went ever so slightly past the post.

Sunderland dominated the 2nd half, and Milan Aleksic came on to score his first goal for the club to put Sunderland back into the game.

Adil Aouchiche cut inside and played a brilliant ball through to Aleksic, who just guided the ball past the ‘keeper, brilliant finish.

The match eventually went to exta-time, and Sunderland continued to dominate, but they continued to be wasteful in front of goal.

Debutant, Salis Abdul Samed played a short pass back towards the defender, and Niall Ennis ran through, round the ‘keeper and slotted the ball home for the winner.

The Black Cats are now out of both the League Cup and the FA Cup, but this means that they can now fully focus on promotion.

Next up for Sunderland is fellow promotion chasers, Burnley away from home on Friday at 8pm.
