Coventry 2-1 Sunderland – Match Report & Player Ratings

Report

Amad Diallo’s wonder goal wasn’t enough as Sunderland fall to a 2-1 defeat at Coventry after a poor performance.

The Black Cats got off to a fast start, and Danny Batth was unlucky to see his header hit the bar following a corner.

Sunderland dominated the ball throughout, but really struggled to break down the Sky Blue’s defence.

Sunderland’s domination on the ball counted for nothing as Coventry took the lead after 25 minutes.

Coventry won the ball back on the halfway line and broke forward, and Gyokeres played in Allen, who couldn’t miss.

Sunderland fans and players were furious with their goal because it looked as though Helhardt was fouled in the build-up.

The Black Cats continued to have all of the possession throughout the second half, but they rarely troubled their ‘keeper.

Amad came close to scoring the equaliser when he cut inside and blasted the ball towards the near post, but Ben Wilson made a great save.

Coventry’s star-man Vikter Gyokeres put the game to bed in the 89th minute with another breakaway goal, he was played in by Matt Godden and he couldn’t miss from close range.

Sunderland did get a consolation goal in the final moments, when Amad finally showed his quality with a brilliant, curling shot into the top corner.

Sunderland stay in 8th place (before the 3pm games), and Coventry move up to 10th, just one point behind Sunderland, with a game in hand.

Player Ratings

Anthony Patterson – 5

Nothing he could do with the goals, but he seemed to hesitate a lot on the ball when Coventry put him under pressure.

Trai Hume – 6

Not his best performance, had one good shot early on which stung the hands of Brn Wilson.

Dan Ballrd – 5

Really struggled against Gyokeres and he also struggled with their high press at times, causing him to panic on the ball.

Danny Batth – 5

Same as Ballard.

Aji Alese – 6

Tried to get forward and help Clarke, not much came off for them both.

Dan Neil – 5

Picked up an early booking and I think it effected his game.

Edouard Michut – 6

Tried his best, but their midfield was too physical for ours.

Jack Clarke – 6

Tried to make things happen and gave his all, but he just couldn’t break down their defence.

Amad – 6

Not at his best again, looks tired and lethargic. However, his goal at the end was pure brilliance.

Patrick Roberts – 6

The one player who looked like he could cause them problems, but Jake Bidwell and Callum Doyle dealt with him well.

Joe Gelhardt – 5

He really struggled as he just didn’t get enough service.

SUBS

Abdoullah Ba – 5

Put himself about, got beat too easily for their second.

Pierre Ekwah – 5

Not a great performance off the bench, came on and didn’t really do much, looked scared of the ball at times.

Alex Pritchard – 6

Came on and looked relatively dangerous at times, didn’t make any real chances though.

Jewison Bennette – 6

Came on and did a job, brilliant work rate down the left side to create Amad’s goal.

MoTM – Patrick Roberts, just because he looked as though he was the only player who was capable of causing any real problems.
