Sunderland 2-0 Middlesbrough – Match Report & Player Ratings


Sunderland beat 10-man Boro for the first time since 2012, infront of over 42,000 spectators.

Sunderland started the stronger of the two sides, and the had a huge chance when Zack Steffen gave the ball to Amad Diallo at the edge of the box, but he somehow put it wide.

Boro had just the one major chance, when Marcus Forss forced a brilliant save from Patterson in the 35th minute.

Ross Stewart almost put Sunderland in the lead as he found himself through on goal right on half-time, but his effort was straight at Steffen.

Early in the second half, Ross Stewart was brought down by Dael Fry, he was the last man and in was just in the box, so the referee gave a red card and a penalty.

Stewart stepped up to take it, but Steffan saved the first attempt, but Stewart followed in to make it 1-0.

Sunderland controlled the game throughout, and with 9 minutes remaining Roberts played in Amad who finished brilliantly passed Steffan to make it 2-0.

Sunderland move up to 5th, just 1 point off the play-offs and Middlesbrough.

Anthony Patterson – 6

Distribution still needs help, made 1 great save.

Trai Hume – 8

Brilliant! Great defensively and offered a lot going forward, he even did a great job when moved to left-back after Alese’s substitution.

Danny Batth – 7

Solid throughout, kept Akpom quiet.

Dan Ballard – 7

Same as Batth, quality!

Aji Alese – 8

Brilliant throughout, defended well and linked up with Clarke really well.

Corry Evans – N/A

Subbed off early with an injury.

Dan Neil – 8

Battled really well in midfield and partnered really well with Michut.

Patrick Roberts – 7

Linked up brilliantly with Amad and set up his goal towards the end.

Amad – 8

Looked threatening throughout and got his goal after missing a few good chances.

Jack Clarke – 6

Not at his best but gave 100%, just needs to work on his final product.

Ross Stewart – 8

Caused Boro loads of problems, and got his goal. Maybe should have had a couple but that doesn’t matter now.


Edouard Michut – 8

I thought he was great, composed on the ball and battled well.

Bailey Wright – 6

Came on and did his job, didn’t need to do much.

Abdoullah Ba – 6

Same as Wright, kept it simple and did well.

Jewison Bennette- 6

Added some more energy to Sunderland as we looked to cool the game off.
