Sunderland Guide: The Tram Car Inn

Location: 51 The Green, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 2HT
The Tram Car Inn is a historic pub situated in the Southwick Village Green in Northern Sunderland. Opened in 1906, it is arguably the oldest pub in the village, with its name a lasting memory of the fact it was situated on an old Sunderland tram route which extended through the area.
With a ornate façade on its front reminiscent of early 20th century designs, the pub was designed by Hugh Hedley. In 1978, the pub was awarded the status of a grade II listed building. This has made it one of the most characteristic buildings and icons of the old green.
In recent years the pub has gained a bit of a “reputation” amongst local residents. Despite this, the pub is enduring as a community venue in a time where pubs on the whole are on decline. As a result, we encourage Sunderland locals to continue supporting historic pubs.
